The Right Experience
Invaluable Professional Experience
To obtain a P.Eng., engineering graduates must complete an on-the-job internship, during which they:
  • Work alongside professional engineers who serve as mentors;
  • Gain two to four years of practical hands-on engineering experience (depending on the province or territory where they apply for licensure) that is relevant, broad and demonstrates professional growth; and
  • Document and submit their work for peer review by their provincial or territorial professional engineering licensing body.
An internship allows graduates to round out their knowledge, apply their skills in a real-world setting and demonstrate their understanding of the high standards expected of professional engineers.

It's also an opportunity for graduates to match their high-level technical skills with essential non-technical skills such as communication and management. At the end of their internship, or engineer-in-training program, engineering graduates have a solid track record behind them that you can count on and build on.

That record is documented by the intern and assessed by the engineering profession as part of the licensure process. Interns whose experience meets the high standards set by the profession can write the professional practice exam and apply for licensure as a P.Eng.

It takes time and commitment to get a P. Eng. That's one reason why you know you're hiring someone with the right stuff when you hire a Professional Engineer.
